Upper body conditions

Pain or discomfort in the upper body can affect the neck, head, jaw, shoulders, arms and upper back. Symptoms may be localised or more widespread and are often influenced by posture, work demands, stress, previous injury and how different areas of the body work together.

This page outlines some common upper body conditions for which people seek Osteopathic care. Clicking on the title links below will take you to more detailed information about each area.

Neck pain
Neck pain is very common and may be associated with stiffness, reduced movement, headaches or pain referring into the shoulders or upper back. Contributing factors can include posture, sustained positions, stress and previous injury.

Headaches and migraines
Some headaches and migraine patterns have musculoskeletal contributors, particularly involving the neck, jaw, upper back and surrounding muscles. Osteopathic assessment looks at these physical factors as part of a wider picture.

Jaw pain
Jaw pain, clenching and grinding can place strain on the jaw joints and surrounding muscles and may be linked with head, face or neck symptoms. Osteopathic care may help where muscle tension and joint strain are contributing.

Shoulder pain and frozen shoulder
Shoulder pain can arise from a range of factors including overuse, reduced mobility, postural strain or following injury. Frozen shoulder typically involves progressive stiffness and restricted movement and often benefits from supportive, staged care.

Wrist and hand pain
Pain in the wrist or hand may be related to repetitive activities, load through the arms, nerve irritation or changes further up the arm or neck. Assessment considers how the whole upper limb is functioning.

Mid-back, chest and rib pain
Pain in the mid-back or rib area can feel sharp, aching or restrictive and is often affected by posture, breathing mechanics and upper body movement patterns.
