Sciatica in pregnancy

Sciatic-type leg pain is something Osteopaths commonly see and pregnancy can add additional factors that influence how symptoms develop and are experienced.

As pregnancy progresses, the body undergoes a number of normal changes. The growing uterus, changes in posture and shifts in centre of gravity all place increased demands on the lower back, pelvis and hips. These adaptations can affect how tissues around the lower back and buttock are working and may contribute to pain that travels into the buttock or down the leg.

For many people, pregnancy-related sciatica is influenced by a combination of postural changes, altered load through the pelvis and increased muscle tension, particularly in the lower back and buttock region. Muscles such as the piriformis can become more active as the body adapts to these changes and this can sometimes irritate nearby nerve structures, leading to leg pain, aching or altered sensation.

Symptoms often become more noticeable later in pregnancy as the centre of gravity moves forward and the lower back curve increases. However, sciatica-type pain during pregnancy does not usually indicate damage to the nerve itself and is most often related to how the surrounding tissues are coping with these changes.

Osteopathic assessment and care

Osteopathic assessment during pregnancy focuses on understanding how the lower back, pelvis and hips are adapting and where strain or tension may be developing. Care is always gentle and appropriate for pregnancy.

Treatment aims to ease muscle tension, support joint movement and reduce strain through the spine and pelvis. Advice is often given on posture, daily activities, sleep positioning and simple movements or exercises that may help manage symptoms. Where relevant, related issues such as pelvic girdle pain or upper back discomfort can also be addressed.

If symptoms are severe, persistent or associated with changes in strength, sensation or bladder or bowel function, further medical assessment is advised.
